Tech the Next Step, Growing Talent from Within

At Walmart, we talk a lot about opportunity—and we mean it. I’ve seen firsthand the impact of investing in the people who are already walking our floors, stocking our shelves, and keeping our buildings running. That’s why I’m so excited about our Associate-to-Technician Program.

We recently unpacked this on an episode of Beyond the Aisle, where I sat down with RJ Zanes, our VP of Facility Services, to talk about how the program is helping associates grow meaningful careers in skilled trades. And what stood out most wasn’t just the technical training—it was how this program truly is changing lives.

What do I love most about this program? You don’t need a technical background to get started. All it takes is curiosity, drive, and a willingness to learn. As RJ said during our conversation, it’s not about experience—it’s about attitude and aptitude.

This program opens the door for associates who are ready for more—offering a path into careers like maintenance, HVAC, electrical and refrigeration. These are critical roles that keep our facilities running every single day. And now, more of our associates can step into them.

What Sets This Program Apart?
  • Access Starts with Openness
We keep the doors wide open. You don’t need to have worked in maintenance or know how to fix a condenser coil. What matters is mindset. The application process is transparent, inclusive and designed to help associates from all backgrounds feel empowered to apply.
  • Hands-On Learning with Real Mentorship
This isn’t just classroom training. It’s about 18 months of structured learning and hands-on experience—working side-by-side with seasoned technicians. That kind of mentorship? It’s a game changer. It’s where knowledge meets confidence.
  • A Clear Path Forward
Graduation isn’t the finish line—it’s just the beginning. Associates complete the program and step into full technician roles. From there, some grow into leadership, others into senior tech positions, and a few—like RJ—keep going all the way to the top. When people see what’s possible, it ignites even more momentum.
This Is What Opportunity Looks Like

This program isn’t just about filling roles. It’s about building futures. It’s about saying to an associate, “We see something in you—let’s grow that.” And then doing the work to help them get there.
