Oscar Romero’s Walmart career began at 18 years old with a temporary job and a simple goal: do the work well and show up with the right attitude. More than three decades later, that same mindset defines how he leads.

 

Today, Oscar serves as Store Manager in Calexico, California, a border community where one Walmart store supports a small U.S. town while welcoming customers from across the border in Mexicali. He leads more than 500 associates, including nearly 200 who have built careers of 20 years or more, with many surpassing 30.

 

That level of tenure is rare, and Oscar is quick to say it has little to do with titles or tenure alone.

Leadership That Starts on the Floor

For Oscar, leadership is built through everyday moments. A quick check-in. A genuine conversation. Knowing what matters to the people you work alongside.

 

When he walks the floor, Oscar is not just managing operations. He is building relationships. He believes when associates feel seen and respected, everything else follows — from customer experience to long-term engagement.

That belief has guided Oscar across six stores and multiple leadership roles, but it is especially visible in Calexico, where over 200 associates have chosen to stay, grow, and build their careers together.

 

Why Calexico Matters

Oscar grew up in this community. He went to school here, shops here, and lives among the customers he serves. Returning to Calexico as a store manager felt less like a promotion and more like a responsibility.

 

Many of the associates he leads today were there early in his career, helping him grow into the leader he is now. Staying was a way to give back.

What a Lasting Career Really Looks Like

Oscar keeps his first Walmart paycheck in his office. When associates ask about growth or their future, he shows them where he started. A temporary role. An opportunity that turned into a career.

 

That message matters. Especially in moments of change. During the pandemic, Oscar led his store through uncertainty and rapid transformation. His focus stayed the same: communicate clearly, take care of people, and keep the team connected. In 2020, the Calexico store was recognized as the Top Walmart Supercenter in the U.S., an achievement Oscar credits entirely to his associates.

When asked what he hopes people remember about him years from now, Oscar does not mention sales, metrics, or titles. He talks about how people felt working alongside him.
